COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.– After a pair of dominant season-opening performances, Boise State running backs Ashton Jeanty and Sire Gaines were recognized by the Mountain West, Monday. Jeanty was named the league's offensive player of the week while Gaines took home freshman of the week honors.
Jeanty had a career-performance against Georgia Southern, breaking the program record in both single-game rushing yards (267) and touchdowns (six). His six rushing touchdowns also tied the MW single-game record set by Sefphon Jefferson Jr. (Nevada) and Kapri Gibbs (Colorado State) and he became just the 10th player in FBS since 2013 to score six rushing touchdowns in a game. He averaged 13.4yards per carry against the Eagles, the third-most in a single game in program history. The award marks Jeanty's second conference player of the week honor after receiving the same award on Sept. 25, 2023.
That also marks the third career 200-yard rushing performance of Jeanty's career, tying for the second-most in school history alongside Jay Ajayi (2012-14), Jeremy McNichols (2014-16), and Alexander Mattison (2016-18). Cedric Minter (1977-80) holds the school record with four 200-yard rushing games over his career. Jeanty needs one more 200-yard rushing performance in his career to reach the top-five of career 200-yard rushing games in Mountain West history.
Gaines had an impressive performance in his first collegiate contest. The fourth-youngest player among FBS programs notched 110 yards on the ground and added two touchdowns – one on the ground and one in the air. He became the first Bronco freshman to rush for over 100 yards in a game since Jeanty did so at the Frisco Bowl in 2022. His 110 yards on the ground marked the eighth-highest total all-time for a Mountain West player in their first career game. The freshman from Perris, Calif., also added three catches for 44 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown reception.
Theduo accounted for seven rushing touchdowns on Saturday's 56-45 victory over Georgia Southern, tied for the fourth-most in program history. Thetwo backs totaled 377rushing yards against the Eagles, the most a pair of Boise State players have ever recorded in a single game. It marked just the 20th time in program history - and first since the 2022 Frisco Bowl - that multiple Bronco backs recorded 100-yard rushing performances.
The tailback tandem will hope to replicate its success in week two, as Boise State is slated to face No. 3/3 Oregon on Sept. 7 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon. The game will start at 8 p.m. MT and will be broadcast on Peaco*ck.

Led by Spencer Danielson in his first full season, Boise State looks to become the first Mountain West program to win back-to-back championships since San Diego State did so in 2015-16. Achieving such a feat will put Boise State in the discussion for the new, expanded, 12-team College Football Playoff format beginning this fall. Last year, Danielson became the first coach in college football history to win a conference championship with an interim title.
